Kansas City, Mo. — Treanor Architects has released the results of its survey on the challenges of on-campus student housing and student life facilities. Almost half of the respondents said that financing projects is their biggest challenge right now, with 25 percent saying that adapting older buildings to fit the lifestyles of today's students is the biggest challenge. When asked how their biggest challenge has affected campus building plans, 33 percent of respondents said it has caused campus building priorities to change, and 29 percent say that projects have been shelved entirely because of.

However, there is also some good news. Only 36 percent of respondents said their biggest challenge has negatively affected student recruiting and retention. When asked about how challenges have affected their building plans, 33 percent said that they have turned to creating a master plan.

The survey also revealed that many campuses need more student housing and are focusing on providing housing over other campus construction needs. At the same time, existing housing stock is in need of upgrading, and universities are finding themselves stretched even thinner financially when it comes to deciding between renovating existing housing or building new housing.
