Richmond, Va. — Gilbane Development Co. is completing construction for a new off-campus student housing community across the street from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Ground broke in spring for 8 1/2 Canal Street, a six-story project that contains four levels of student housing over two levels of parking. The project will contain 540 beds in a mix of one- through four-bedroom units. Community amenities will include a clubhouse with a game room, a fitness center and a cyber café. The project also contains two private courtyard gardens. Campus Advantage will manage the new community, which is being built to LEED specifications. Gilbane anticipates the project being ready for students before the falls 2011 semester begins.
