Education Realty Trust Purchases Housing Adjacent to UC Berkeley for $16.3 Million

Two-building, 167-bed community to undergo renovations before Fall 2011 semester.

Berkeley, Calif. — Education Realty Trust (EDR) has purchased the Westminster House, a collegiate housing community adjacent to the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), for $16.3 million. The community comprises two buildings adjacent to the north and south side of campus, containing a total of 167 beds. The original Westminster House, located across the street from the UC Berkeley south campus, primarily serves first- and second-year students. It features a library, a rooftop deck, and an underground parking garage. Residential rooms are fully furnished and include utilities, Internet access, microwaves, and mini-refrigerators. Renovated in 2003, the property houses 128 beds.

Meanwhile, Westminster House North is directly adjacent to the UC Berkeley north campus. Amenities include stone fireplaces, large seating areas in the dining and living room areas, high-speed Internet access, two television lounges, a parking lot, bicycle storage and an on-site laundry facility. Rooms are fully furnished and include microwaves and mini-refrigerators. It was also renovated in 2003.

EDR will complete cosmetic improvements to both locations for fall 2011 move-in at an additional cost of $800,000.
