Georgia State University Moves Forward with Turner Field Redevelopment in Atlanta

by Katie Sloan

Atlanta — Georgia State University and neighborhood associations representing communities in the surrounding area have reached an agreement on a long-term plan for the university’s engagement with area residents.

The university is set to redevelop the former Turner Field, now called Georgia State Stadium, with development partners Carter, Oakwood Development and Healey Weatherholtz. The university’s development partners have purchased 22 acres and leased 13.5 acres surrounding the stadium for retail stores, housing, commercial office space and other uses.

The plan for the university’s engagement with area residents includes enhancement of safety, security and transportation in the area; children- and adult-focused programs including an After-School All-Stars program and Project Healthy Grandparents; service learning initiatives; and research projects and business development opportunities.

“Georgia State believes the redevelopment of the Turner Field site will be transformational for all parties involved,” says Georgia State President, Mark Becker.
