Baltimore — Construction has begun for a new graduate student residence hall at Johns Hopkins University.
Baltimore — The groundbreaking ceremony was held today for a new residence hall at Johns Hopkins University. Known as 929, the project will provide 572 new beds to graduate students. The 20-story building will contain 321 one- and two-bedroom units with apartment-style amenities such as hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances, and granite countertops. The building will also feature a rooftop terrace, a fitness center and 8,300 square feet of ground-floor retail space. It is seeking LEED-Silver certification.
The project team for 929 includes developers Education Realty Trust and Otis Warren & Co. Marks, Thomas Architects is designing it, and the general contractor is Clark Construction. The grand opening is scheduled for summer 2012, after which Education Realty Trust will manage the community for a 10-year term.
The residence hall will anchor the first phase of the new Science + Technology Park at Johns Hopkins, which is located adjacent to the school’s east campus. Plans for the Science + Technology Park also include five buildings containing 1.1 million square feet of laboratory space. Johns Hopkins has leased 88 acres, including the land the residence hall is situated on, to a joint venture between East Baltimore Development Inc. and Forest City Enterprises for the development of a new master-planned community known as the New East Side. In the coming years, the Science + Technology Park will be joined by 1,200 new or renovated, mixed-income residences, 80,000 square feet of retail space and 3 acres of green space.
