San Antonio, Texas Virtus Real Estate Capital is a backer of the urban, mixed-use development.

The development team says Tobin Lofts will be a catalyst for further growth in the Tobin Hill neighborhood. The iconic Luther’s Cafe, a local fixture by the campus, is confirmed as the first anchor tenant in the commercial space. San Antonio, Texas — A mixed-use development is blending a touch of Hollywood with a 552-bed student housing project.

The $45 million Tobin Lofts are going up near San Antonio College, one of five schools in the Alamo Colleges system and the largest, single-campus community college in Texas.

The development will include 14,000 square feet of ground-level commercial space as well as a film and media center. Actor and San Antonio native Ricardo Chavira, whose credits include roles in “Desperate Housewives” and “Six Feet Under,” served as an advisor in the design of the Ricardo Chavira Film Center, which will be located in the development. Additionally, he will program the space for media arts students and the public.

Alamo Colleges in partnership with The NRP Group are developing the project, which will open in fall 2013, followed by additional lofts opening spring 2014. Campus Advantage will manage the property. The team also includes Alamo Architects, Jacobs and Jaster-Quintanilla. Financing was made possible by Broadway Bank financing more than $20 million and Virtus Real Estate Capital financing $6.7 million.
