University of West Alabama Housing Receives LEED for Homes Silver Certification

Birmingham, Ala. The building is the first LEED for Homes certification in Alabama.

The Hoover Apartment addition at the University of West AlabamaBirmingham, Ala. —  The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded the Hoover Apartment addition at the University of West Alabama with a LEED for Homes Certification. Hoar Program Management worked with university officials, Herrington Architects, and Amason and Associates to design and build the project using sustainable materials to achieve the Silver certification.

According to Hoar, the key accomplishments that led to the certification included exterior and interior elements in the compact development. Tthe LEED for Homes designation is intended for low-rise residential.

The buildings were constructed using efficient framing techniques, recycled flooring and drywall materials, low-VOC flooring and paint. The energy systems are 18 percent more efficient than standard building codes require.
